PREPARATION FOR DEPARTURE COURSE

Once you have been accepted into MSF Australia’s pool of field workers, you will be asked to attend a pre-departure course (known as the ‘Welcome Days’) or an alternative specific briefing. The course aims to provide first mission-ers with an understanding of MSF’s values, policies, activities, philosophy and concepts, along with an introduction to life in the field. It is not a training course in the strictest sense, but rather a preparatory session offering new field workers the opportunity to get to know MSF better. It is also an opportunity to ask questions, further discuss information contained in this Manual, to meet our Field Human Resources team and other MSF Australia staff in person, hear from returned field workers and learn what life is really like in the field.

We cover travel, accommodation and meal expenses related to these sessions.

For certain field jobs, for example Logisticians and Administrators, additional training of a more technical nature may be provided by the relevant MS before you depart for the field.

MSF Australia would like each new recruit to take part in a Welcome Days course. If in exceptional circumstances we agree that you cannot attend a course before you leave for the field (for example if recruitment is finalised after the Welcome Days courses) then we will provide you with an extensive briefing.

Our Field HR team will send you detailed information about Welcome Day arrangements at the appropriate time. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need to know the dates of scheduled Welcome Days well in advance in order to assist with your own planning.

Please remember that due to the nature of MSF activities we can never guarantee you a mission and it is always possible that MSF may need to review a recruitment at the Welcome Days stage, or even later in the departure process. It is even possible that a mission may be cancelled as a field worker is already on his/her way to the field.

  • MSF Australia expects that each candidate who participates in the Welcome Days Pre Departure Course to have seriously considered their commitment to field work with MSF
  • MSF expects you to honour your commitment to go to the field with MSF if a mission is offered to you within the time frame of your availability
  • MSF Australia anticipates that each candidate is prepared to commit themselves for field work within 6 months of attendance at the Welcome Days Pre Departure Course
  • If, in the event that a candidates reneges on this commitment without just cause, MSF A reserves the right to claim from the individuals the expenses of the individuals participation in the Welcome Days Pre Departure Course. This decision of right to claim remains with MSF Australia.

DEPARTURE PROCEDURE

Once you have been accepted into MSF Australia’s pool of field workers, and after completing the Welcome Days course or an alternative specific briefing, your Human Resources Officer (HRO) will contact you once a vacancy which matches your skills and experience arises. Your HRO will send you a copy of the job profile and information about the country and project. The job profile outlines the field worker’s role and responsibilities on mission. If you accept the role, your HRO will confirm the offer, assist you through the administrative procedures, organise your pre-departure briefings and your departure for mission.

Refer to the flowchart for a summary of the typical steps from successful recruitment until departure for your mission country. Please note that there is always the possibility of variations to this procedure due to changed circumstances, project needs in the field, etc. It must also be kept in mind that even though MSF Australia has accepted you into the recruitment pool, proceeding to the field still depends on project and training availability, and matching your experience, skill set and availability to project needs.
