Central African Republic: burnt-out villages and people on the run

Since June 2005, rebels and government forces have been fighting in the North of the Central African Republic, and it is the local population which is paying the price for the continuing violence. Around the town of Markounda, almost all the villages have been destroyed and the houses burnt down. Whole areas have been abandoned. In this region alone, thousands of villagers have fled into the bush or over the border to neighbouring Chad. Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) is assisting the displaced population from its base in Markounda.
