BOLIVIA
Chagas is a parasitic infection that currently affects around eight million people in Latin America. Bolivia is affected more than any other country. Transmitted by blood-sucking insects commonly found in poor and rural areas, Chagas kills by attacking the heart and/or the intestinal system. Existing medicines have many side-effects and so far no curative treatment for adults has been found and children have been the main target of MSF's chagas programs.

COLUMBIA
Conflict has afflicted parts of Colombia for over 40 years, with guerrilla groups fighting against government forces, police and government-backed paramilitary. In 2007, it was estimated that 3.8 million people had fled their homes because of violence, massacres, assassinations and intimidation. The psychological and social consequences of living in this climate of fear are having a huge and lasting impact on the lives of many Colombians. Psychological and mental health support is a key component of most MSF activities throughout the country. › more on Colombia

HAITI
Violence and insecurity were very common in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, during 2006 and 2007. Even with a newly elected government in place, there were confrontations involving various armed groups, and the Haitian National Police and UN Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), as well as frequent kidnappings and sexual violence. › more on Haiti

PERU
In Peru, MSF focuses on developing projects to address sexually transmitted infections, particularly HIV/AIDS. MSF continues to offer HIV/AIDS care in the Lima slum of Villa El Salvador. This is a pilot project offering decentralised care through numerous sites at the health district level (rather than through a single health structure). As of June 2007, MSF had 289 patients following anti-retroviral treatment (ART) through the project and was providing voluntary counselling and HIV testing to approximately 1,100 people per month. › more on Peru
