In 2007, new clashes between the Sri Lankan Army and the Tamil Tiger rebels in the east of Sri Lanka, led to nearly 140,000 people fleeing the fighting. Since May [2007], Médecins Sans Frontières teams have intervened to deliver assistance to 12,000 displaced people in six camps in the north of the Batticaloa district.
Using mobile clinics, MSF delivers primary healthcare to the population and transfers the more severe cases to the reference hospitals. Also, MSF teams have expanded water and sanitation activities and distributed NFI kits.
In December 2007, the return home of the majority of the displaced population led to MSF ending its activities around Batticaloa.
