MSF team in Hawija

Located at the west of Kirkuk Governorate, the Hawija district was part of Iraq’s one-third of territory that fell under the control of the Islamic State (IS) group in 2014. For three years, thousands of people fled their homes, leaving everything behind. Hundreds of thousands were displaced into camps in Kirkuk and other governorates. The district’s health infrastructure sustained significant damage.

As of February 2024, close to 190,000 people have been displaced in Kassala state alone, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive humanitarian assistance. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) planned a 10-week program to provide targeted medical and humanitarian aid in response to the acute emergency.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) strongly condemns the missile attack on its office in Pokrovsk, Donetsk region, Ukraine, on 5 April. Following the attack, in which MSF's office was destroyed, we have suspended medical humanitarian activities in the Donetsk region temporarily, except supporting emergency care and ambulance referral services.
