South Sudan, the youngest country in the world, experienced severe instability throughout 2022 continuing into early 2023. Eight out of its ten states were wracked by violence. This upheaval triggered extensive population displacements, predominantly in the Abyei Special Administrative Area and regions such as Twic County.

Three years into its campaign to have noma recognised as a neglected tropical disease (NTD), international medical organisation Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) welcomes the decision by Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), to include noma in the WHO’s official list of NTDs.

On Tuesday, 12 December 2023, a group of armed men stopped an MSF ambulance in Port-au-Prince. They took a patient out by force and killed him. MSF is suspending all activities in the Emergency Centre indefinitely.
