Fistula in Shamwana, DRC

Democratic Republic of Congo / 01.03.11

In places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, people who suffer complications during childbirth have little access to maternal healthcare leading to a significant number of maternal deaths Women who do survive a difficult labour can be left with a permanent injury to their birth canal leading to the continual chronic leaking of urine. This condition is known as obstetric fistula. Sufferers often live with severe social stigma due to odour and perceptions of uncleanliness. In Shamwana in the DRC, Médecins Sans Frontières offers a surgical procedure to repair women's internal injuries and provide a cure for their incontinence.
