Bombing and violence in the transitional area of Abyei in late May 2011 forced up to 100,000 people to flee into South Sudan. Fearing further attacks in the contested border area between North and South Sudan, many people walked up to 10 days to find refuge.

Throughout June, 6,300 exhausted people made their way to Mayen Pajok and Juong Pajok – two villages in Akon, Warrap State. Many experienced traumatic violence and loss. Most arrived with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.
