Typhoon Tembin in the southern Philippines

29 Dec 2017

On 22 December, Typhoon Tembin struck the southern Philippines. More than 200 people died in the resulting flash floods and mudslides, with many more still missing. According to estimates, 715,000 were affected by the typhoon.

Most of the casualties were in Lanao del Norte. Other areas that suffered heavy flooding include Cagayan de Oro, Davao City, and Lanao del Sur, in the country’s Mindanao region.

An MSF team is based in the area, supporting people displaced by the conflict that opposed Islamic State group -affiliated fighters and the Philippines army earlier this year.

The team visited affected communities and will begin NFI distribution (including water kits and hygiene kits) to hundreds of families in remote areas in the next few days.
