The United Nations estimates that 3.8 million people have died needlessly in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), some because of violence, but the great majority from preventable diseases like malaria and measles. Despite a peace accord signed in 2002, the population is subjected to continued violence and the country languishes in extreme deprivation, lacking food, shelter and the most basic health care. After 40 years of non-democratic rule, the country held elections in July 2006. No clear winner emerged and a run-off election will be held in late October between Mr Joseph Kabila and his opposition rival Jean-Pierre Bemba.

MSF has worked in DRC since 1981.
