Greece: Survivors of Torture

27 Jun 2017

Among the thousands of people who have arrived in Europe via the migration routes, some have passed through horrific experiences, having been tortured in their home country, or during the journey. Their body and mind often show scars, but it takes a specialised medical professional to recognise their severe trauma. Too often their terrible ordeal is overlooked during the asylum process, thus blocking their access to receive adequate assistance. For International Day to Support Survivors of Torture, we would like to take the opportunity to highlight the challenges for torture survivors, with a specific focus on our activities in our clinic of Athens, Greece with migrant and refugee population.
